The Letter Writing Program

A Free Resource from WriteGuide.com

Letter writing is a lost art.  Before the days of telephones and fax machines, people wrote letters to one another using reliable pen and paper.  Their letters were gracious, as well as sincere.

In an age of e-mail and fancy Internet message boards, we at WriteGuide.com feel that it's important to rekindle the tradition of communicating in a way that is more personal, more thoughtful, and ultimately more civil.

Our eight-week Letter Writing Program is designed for students ages ten and up.  Working together, students learn eight essential literary devices.  The Letter Writing Program is something that you must organize and evaluate for your children.  It's a parent-led activity.

Our Letter Writing Program is simple...

Step One:

Find someone with whom your son or daughter would like to correspond (a neighbor, a friend, a relative, a pen-pal).

Step Two:

Each student should/participant should download and print the first file below (Imagery), and read through it in order to write the first of eight letters.  Parents are encouraged to help, especially with younger writers.

1. Imagery 5. Symbolism
2. Internal Dialogue 6. Parallel Structure
3. Similes and Metaphors 7. Personification
4. Flashbacks 8. Word Choice

Step Three:

After the two students finish their letters, they should exchange them (via e-mail, or in person, or via regular mail).  When the students receive the letters they should read them and search for examples of the literary device in question.  Students can then discuss (through e-mail, on the phone, or in person - any way they want, really) the literary devices in order to make sure the devices were, in fact, present, and were used properly.  As always, parents are encouraged to help!

Step Four:

The program continues until all eight lessons have been completed using steps one through three.
